Coming Soon: ‘Marriage in American Muslim Communities by Prof. Juliane Hammer

Coming soon to Religion Compass: ‘Marriage in American Muslim Communities’ by Prof. Juliane Hammer – PROVISIONAL ABSTRACT:
Marriage in its relation to religion, specifically Islam, is intrinsically linked to questions of sexual and gender norms. U.S. Muslim communities , extremely diverse in their backgrounds, negotiate marriage in their discourses on a spectrum that constructs “American” and “Muslim” as opposing ends, while the realities of American Muslim marriage present a much more richly textured and thus complex picture. Norms and practices are co-developed in a complicated web of gender debates, distinctions of religion from culture, and developments within the American religious, social, and political environment that American Muslims share.
