While the British authorities are concerned about the rise of gang culture at British prisons, many inmates are converting to Islam to enjoy protection by Muslim gangs, whose numbers are growing at worrying pace. Adherents of Islam now constitute 11 percent of the total prison population in the UK, with Muslims making up to 25 percent of the prison population at some top security jails such as Long Lartin in Worcestershire.
